How to Put Together Troop Gifts and Troop Gift Baskets!

Regarding troops or troop gifts you should know that the Department of Defense requests that " the general public is urged not to send unsolicited mail, care packages or donations to service members forward deployed unless you are a family member, loved one or personal friend."
Armed with that information you can decide whether you fit that category or not. Or contact a family member to let them know you'd like to send a gift, or gift box.
I don't recommend sending an actual gift basket, because what would they do with it? But a sturdy box of the gifts would be much appreciated.
You'll want to put together something that will travel well.
Is the basket for one of the troops or a group?
You will need a large sturdy box of course, if for more than one.
Seal well with packing tape.
Make sure you have the correct address.
Think of weight when choosing items.
Family members usually know what items their loved one would like. What may not be known is that there are many items that can be used for 'bargaining chips'. Something that others have a high demand for but your loved one doesn't need. These can be included too to be traded for items he or she needs that aren't readily available.
Now the Troops or Troop Gifts - Items to Consider:
Pre-paid phone cards
Copenhagen Snuff & Chew® in a tin. Enclose 10 tins. A large percentage of the infantry use this and it's very hard to get. This is the most powerful 'bargaining chip' you can send.
Hot sauce like TABASCO® or Trappey's ®Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce
Energy bars
Beef Jerky or foot-long Slim Jims
Baby wipes in packets not in tubs for taking field baths
Important to Know What Troop Gifts Not to Send
Anything that melts, like chocolate, except M&M'S®, waterless hand cleaner or sanitizers (make mud - send only baby wipes in the packets instead), flashlights (can't use due to 'visible light' discipline restrictions), compass, (they already have), sunscreen (they have plenty), liquor or pornography.
There you have it. Just some of the items to consider when sending a member of the troop gifts or gifts to the troops.
